Medical Valley Project

"Mie prefecture promotes the concentration and creation of competitive industries which provide high-quality products and services, the construction of an industrial base and the region which can survive global inter-regional competition."

In the midst of the change of the Japanese industrial structure, Mie prefecture has been developed as an industrial base which is representing Japan. Mie has the advantage of being a geologically convenient location, blessed with its natural environment and its proud history and culture. We have recognized them as regional resources and offered to move competitive enterprises into Mie at every period.
In current Japanese society, the population is aging because of the decline in birthrate and the increase in number of citizens who are conscious of their health. In order to cope with the social and economical situation and to concentrate and promote medical, health, and welfare industries, whose market is expected to expand, we launched the Medical Valley Project.
The project aims to create and concentrate medical, health, and welfare industries which are responsible for the next generation, by utilizing the organic collaboration among industry, academia, administration and private sector. The project promotes several measures: to hold joint workshops among industry, academia, administration and private sector in order to bring out the potentials of the research base including universities and research institutes; to create bio-venture enterprise; to lure companies by utilizing location advantage.
In this way, we will promote the creation of new industries, new entries from outside, and the development of existing small and medium-sized enterprises. We will also promote the concentration and creation of competitive industries, which provide high-quality products and services, the construction of the industrial base and the region which can survive global inter-regional competition.

The Local Potential of Mie:
Sustaining medical, health and welfare industries.

Concentrating leading industries of the coming ages

Enterprises have been set up in Mie because of the following advantages. First, Mie lies in the middle between Osaka and Nagoya, recognized as two major consumer markets in Japan. They are both easily accessed from Mie. Second, they can obtain economical commercial land of proper size easily. In the early days, spinning plants moved into Mie, and in the high economic growth period enterprises set up material-oriented plants including petroleum chemistry in the coastal regions. Then they put up processing and assembly plants inland. These days, advanced technologies, including semiconductor and liquid crystal display plants, move to Mie. In this way, Mie has promoted the concentration of leading industries for the coming ages.

Concentrating health, medical, welfare industries

The regional resources and experiences sustaining the concentration of leading industries are effectively utilized as in the "Medical Valley Project" in the field of medical, health and welfare industries, which are said to lead the next generation. Therefore, the number of business offices of pharmaceutical manufacturers and biotechnology-related industries has been increasing.

Various Support Systems

In Mie, the development of a support system has been advanced. Mie TLO Co., Ltd. plays an important role in transferring not only the results of research activities of universities and colleges, but also new technologies to the industrial world. A prefectural research institute provides R&D and technical support for pharmaceutical, and supports R&D of functional food and welfare equipment. In addition, Mie Industry and Enterprise Support Center provides supports to all other relating businesses including venture enterprises to create new industries.
